Buying property in the Algarve may be unknown territory for many, but over recent years vast amounts of foreigners have done just that. Complicated procedures have now been replaced with smooth running methods, with advice available from English speaking lawyers and financiers in all aspects of buying your dream home in Portugal.

The Algarve, unlike many other European countries, has kept its traditional values and timeless charm and this is what appeals to many. The region is known for its spectacular coastline, including scores of glorious beaches. If you venture a few kilometres inland, the land has evergreen tress and shrubs and so remains remarkably lush even in the height of summer. Less known, but still worth a visit, are the mountainous areas laying to the north, with their abundance of vineyards, olive, almond and fig trees.

Tourism is the Algarve´s major economic activity. It attracts golfers all year round to play on the abundance of first class golf courses, extending from the east to west coasts. The summer will bring in families, who are particularly attracted to the safe beaches and relatively unspoilt area. In fact, the environment is less spoilt and polluted compared to other European countries. Growing popular awareness ensures it stays that way. One consequence of this awareness means that bird watching has become a favourite pastime in the Algarve.

The Algarve has benefited greatly from tourism as this has brought in considerable prosperity to the region. Tourism has contributed significantly to the overall economic strength of the area and the Algarve is now an integral part of an ambitious, forward-looking nation. However, at the same time, tourism has not spoilt the region.

The Algarve enjoys a cost of living considerably less than that enjoyed by other European countries. Foreigners will be amazed at the value for money restaurants, with the abundance of native cuisine and local wines. Dining out is the norm, rather than the exception, in the Algarve.

Faro is the main airport in the Algarve. A flight from the UK will take no more than three hours. And once you have arrived at Faro, there is no place in the Algarve which will take you more than an hour and a half drive. Satellite television, cellular telephones, fax machines, computer modems and the internet mean you can be as much or as little in touch with others as you like.

Language is not a problem in most areas. English is spoken freely in cafes, bars and restaurants. However, a little Portuguese would be of use if you want to visit rural locations.

The Algarve is a place to relax and do little or, if you prefer it, indulge in the outdoors activities. It is a very different scene to the grey gloom of northern Europe. There are blue skies in the mornings and fresh, clean crisp air. The ideal place for your dream home in the sun.
